Of course, I initially fell in love with British Longhairs because of their looks, it’s pretty hard to resist those round teddy bear faces, big eyes, and gorgeous fluffy coats! But after living with them, I fell in love with their personalities just as much.

British Longhairs tend to have such calm, sweet, and easygoing temperaments while still being incredibly engaging with their people. They seem to love being involved in whatever you’re doing and, at least with mine, they absolutely LOVE posing for the camera! 

As kittens, they are playful, curious, and so much fun to watch. As they mature, I’ve found that they become calmer and increasingly affectionate. They aren’t necessarily known for being traditional “lap cats,” and I think that’s worth being honest about. Mine absolutely love affection and will happily come over for snuggles, but they may cuddle for a little while and then decide they’ve had enough and go relax nearby.  To me, they have the perfect balance, they’re affectionate without being overly demanding, playful without being crazy, and they genuinely enjoy interacting with their people. Add in those adorable teddy bear looks, and it’s pretty easy to understand why I became completely obsessed with them. 

Of course I want to produce absolutely gorgeous British Longhairs, but to me, a beautiful cat means very little without the health and temperament to match. I’m intentionally choosing the cats in my breeding program based on the whole package, not just a pretty face.

Health will always come first, which is why we go above and beyond with extensive health testing on all of our kings and queens, including comprehensive genetic testing and echocardiograms to screen their hearts.

Temperament is just as important when I’m deciding which cats belong in my breeding program. If a cat isn’t exceptionally sweet, social, and people oriented, I simply won’t breed them. One of the things that makes cats so special to me is the bond they form with their people, and I want the kittens I produce to have those same loving personalities.

My goal with every pairing is simple: beautiful, healthy kittens with amazing temperaments to match. That’s what being a Butter Bear is all about.

Our kittens are raised right in our home, and I truly believe it shows in their personalities. They grow up surrounded by lots of love, attention, and everyday household activity. We’re constantly holding, playing with, and interacting with our kittens throughout the day—they are very much a part of our daily lives!

I also regularly have family and friends over, so our kittens get plenty of interaction with different people and don’t grow up only knowing me. I want them to be comfortable with people and accustomed to the normal sights, sounds, and activity of a home before they ever leave mine.

We also introduce regular grooming from a young age, including brushing, nail trims, and baths when needed. This helps them become comfortable with being handled and makes continuing their grooming routine much easier once they’re home with their new families.

Temperament Comes First
British Longhairs aren’t necessarily known for being the biggest cuddle bugs, which is exactly why temperament is so important to me when choosing my breeding cats. I specifically look for cats that are exceptionally friendly, confident, outgoing, and affectionate because those are the qualities I hope they’ll pass down to their kittens.

Fuego is a perfect example of this. He has truly never met a stranger and is one of the sweetest, most affectionate cats you could meet—and we see so much of that same personality come through in his babies!

My hope is to produce British Longhairs that have everything we love about the breed, but with an extra emphasis on being social, people-oriented, and hopefully a little extra snuggly too.
